We’ve all been through those times when we’d just love to shed a few pounds. Unfortunately many of us have looked to a fad or restrictive diet in order to do so. Well, I’m about to show you why these diets simply do not work in the long term.
It is estimated over 150 million Americans and 1.5 billion people across the globe are obese or overweight (1). What a depressing statistic! The modern food environment including historically low food prices, invasive food advertising, larger portion sizes, the abundance of restaurants and the sheer amount of processed foods all contribute to the unhealthy habits most people have formed today.
97% of Americans struggle to routinely eat a healthy diet and get sufficient exercise. Ninety seven percent!? (2) Like the plague and typhoid in centuries past, obesity is just as serious a public health crisis.
More than ever before, cheap, high calorie, low nutrient foods are at our fingertips. The large number of restaurants and proliferation of vending machines mean we are assaulted by food marketing at every corner. If you struggle to control your urges you are not alone, it is seriously difficult for any human to have the willpower to resist these messages all day, every day. We are suffering from cognitive overload, there’s just too much choice throughout the day and did you know self control fatigues, like a muscle? This means that you’re actually more likely to reach for unhealthy snacks and meals later in the day.
When you start a “diet”, you will usually restrict both intake and calories and occasionally entire food groups. While this may sound like a great “quick fix” option, it is near impossible to maintain these restrictive habits long term. No one wants to sit down to a separate meal from their family every night or only eat salad greens for every meal.
Research from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (3) shows, people who frequently cook meals at home consume fewer calories and eat healthier overall than those who cook less. It seems eating your own home cooked food is the simple and healthy way to lose weight and maintain a healthy balance in life.
It is our daily habits that drive great health and a happy lifestyle. At Livlightly we follow a crowd-it-out approach, crowding out your plate with abundant healthy and tasty real food so that there simply isn’t room for the junk. You’ll never go hungry again.
